Bestjet collapse: Perth family’s wedding trip in doubt as travel website goes under

A perth family’s plans to fly to India for a wedding have been thrown into turmoil with the collapse of online travel agent Bestjet.

They are among many West Australians affected by the collapse of the Brisbane-based company, which went into administration on Tuesday.

Jarnail Singh Bhaur had used Bestjet twice this year without any issue and went online again to buy airfares to India for a family wedding in January.

He spent about $8000 on seven flights in three transactions over the last three weeks – but this time he did not receive any e-tickets.

“I tried to call (Bestjet) and got no reply,” he said. “I sent four reminder emails, no reply. Then I lodged a complaint to consumer protection in Queensland and WA.”

Mr Bhaur received a call back on Wednesday morning from a consumer protection official to say that the e-tickets would be issued soon and the delay was due to high demand.

But there was bad news on Thursday morning.

“They called me again to advise me about the liquidation of Bestjet and the only option for me is to lodge a claim to my bank for credit back,” he said.

He said the bank told him a refund process could take between 10 and 45 working days.
